There are different levels of knowing. I know many people by their reputation only.
Mar_6:14 Now King Herod heard of Him, for His name had become well known. And he said, “John the Baptist is risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him.”
There are many people we all know because we have heard of them, seen them on Television, in a film or a sports team. If they suddenly die we feel the pain as if we really did know them. But in truth we only knew of them.
It has another side to it.
Many well known public figures are very lonely people. They may have thousands or even millions of adoring fans, but none of them truly knows their heart.
Many performers and politicians carefully present only an outer persona that we are allowed to know. Yet this outer skin is not real and not the real person at all. Yet we think that we know that “star.” And for most people that is enough anyway, they do not want to know the real person under the public persona.
Usually we find out after the person dies that they were not quite so perfect or appealing as they made out. Sometimes it works the other way. Sometimes the person who was labeled as evil and wicked outwardly was really putting all of that on for show.
Being real is the first thing anyone needs to be if they want to be truly known.
God wants to be fully known by us.
Jer 24:7 Then I will give them a heart to know Me, that I am the LORD; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God, for they shall return to Me with their whole heart.
God is real, genuine, sincere, without hypocrisy, without shadow of turning, steadfast, faithful, love, light, truth, humble, lowly, meek. Knowing God–Can we really know God?
The answer is –Do we want to know God? Really know God?
Luk 23:8 Now when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad; for he had desired for a long time to see Him, because he had heard many things about Him, and he hoped to see some miracle done by Him.
Herod desired for a long time to see Jesus because he had heard many things about Him. Herod did not want to know Jesus, only for Jesus to do some miracle….much like a king calling for a Magician to entertain him when he is bored.
We can be like that too. Do we want to know Jesus or do we just want him to do something for us?
Jesus’ brothers judged Jesus as one trying to become famous. Much like Joseph’s brothers judged Joseph for being spiritual..and David’s elder brothers judged him in the same way. Having a heart after God –a heart that knows God and wants to make Him known will draw the attention of the Accuser.
Joh_7:4 For no one does anything in secret while he himself seeks to be known openly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.”
The accuser will always try to make what we choose to do out of freedom of heart a bad thing. It was true that Jesus wanted to be in public to speak freely what God had put in His heart to share. Satan criticizes and twists what we do accusing us of vain self glory. He does that because that is what he himself does all the time. Satan is always out to make a big show of himself to draw attention to himself–a self that is false in every way.
Jesus said many times that ‘He did nothing of Himself, but the Father does the works.’ He said He did not come to do His own will but that of the Father. It was Father in Jesus that walked the earth in a human body. Father wants to be known by us all….therefore He prepared a body for that purpose.
Joh 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
When Jesus finally did go up to the Feast of Tabernacles as recorded in John 7 and spoke boldly in the Temple they accused him of having a demon. To that Jesus responded: John 7:24 Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”
Jesus ministry was to reveal God in the flesh to Israel. But He being a human like them was the stumbling block that offended them immensely. God wants to be known by us, but when He comes to His own His own rejected Him. They judged Jesus according to outward appearance. This is not simply speaking about his looks as even Isaiah said that when we look at him there is nothing to be desired about him.
He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him. Isa 53:2b
We know that God looks at the heart but man looks at the outer appearance.
1Sa 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him(David’s brother). For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.“
Outer appearances are what the world puts forth as the true self, the real me…the me that I want you to see. But is that me? God sees the heart. God wants to be known even as He knows you. How does God know you? He knows you by heart!! God knows your heart my dear friend. Despite your best efforts to hide under a facade of your choosing, your heart is known by Father. He loves you dearly…He never judges you, never thinks evil towards you, never rejects you–He who created you knows you fully.
All of our history may be known by other people according to outward appearance. We may have a criminal conviction against our name…we may have a reputation as a loose woman, a womaniser, a pimp, a thief, a man only after money or sex, shallow Hal…all sorts of things. People may have good reason to judge us and put us in a box…BUT….God is NOT JUDGING YOU ACCORDING TO OUTWARD APPEARANCE.
Father took you and all your sins to the Cross when Jesus agreed to become you in all our ugliness. All that outer baggage died with Him. You are a new heart, a new creation, reconciled to God, justified and at peace with Him. If you believe in Jesus you can experience this if you don’t yet believe in Him then you are stuck with the old view of your self.
God wants to change your view of your self…to match the view He has of you.
When Jesus went to that Feast in John 7 and they judged Him as being a sinner filled with demons, it was the ploy of Lucifer to stop Jesus being accepted or known for Who He is.
When we listen to the accuser we are sold a false message and a false view of others, a false view of God and of our self. Jesus knew that there was confusion about Him. He knew that people judge by outer information….but He also knew that the heart of man judges by heart information.
So to amplify the contrast between heart and head…life and death…tree of Life versus tree of knowledge of good and evil He says…
Joh 7:28 ….”You both know Me, and you know where I am from; and I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know.
Yes they knew alright! They knew according to outer information. That was the stumbling block in their head. Jesus was from Nazareth! His birth place of Bethlehem was not known by them. Therefore how could he be the Messiah for all knew that Messiah comes from Bethlehem. Add to that the fact that Nazareth is in Galilee of the Gentiles…and as such the Jews despised Galileans.
These assumed correct facts about Jesus were huge barriers to the Jews preventing them from knowing Jesus in their heads as the Messiah. But the barriers were put there on purpose to guard the way to the Tree of Life(Jesus). Only the heart could get past those barriers and eat the wonderful fruit of knowing God by heart. Jesus spoke to their heads with the facts but then confounded them by saying that “ I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know.” Then He made it clearer… But I know Him, for I am from Him, and He sent Me.” John 7:29
It must be this way. The head wants facts and everything to line up according to outward appearance. We CAN NEVER KNOW GOD that way…we will only ever know about Him in some separated distant fashion. The heart is hungry to know God and is not deterred by the head.
Then Jesus further confuses their heads by saying “I shall be with you a little while longer, and then I go to Him who sent Me.
John 7:34 You will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you cannot come.” Joh 7:33
Here again Jesus is barring the way to the Tree of Life. Remember that to know God and Jesus Whom He sent is life aionian. John 17:3 He says that they “shall seek Him and not find Him.” Didn’t He teach elsewhere that anyone who seeks shall find? But they shall only seek Him with their heads therefore they shall not find Him. He is going to return to the Father. No one can come to the Father by the head knowledge route. Jesus is the Way.
Jesus was stating an absolute law of the spirit. Where I AM you–your false outer self–head knowledge–CANNOT COME.
Where I am–I am going to Him Who sent Me. Where is the Father? God is a Spirit so He is everywhere but especially in the heart’s of those who believe in Jesus. They would seek Jesus in their unbelief and not be able to find Him…But all those who seek Him with a heart of desire will find Him. We always find what we are seeking. If we seek outer knowledge of God we find outer knowledge and be left unsatisfied. If we seek inner knowing we shall find it by coming to Jesus with our heart.
Jesus said all these things during the middle of the week long feast. He left enough time for hunger and thirst to build and then…
On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.
He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”John 7:37,38
The heart pants like the deer by the water brooks. The heart hungers to eat and to drink God. To know God by heart is begun by faith and continues by faith. It is to eat and drink Jesus so that Jesus becomes to us our only life. When we come in faith to Jesus we are coming to our reflection, our true self. We may either eat His flesh and take on Him as our very self or we may reject Him as our self and keep him far off as a separate person that we must try to copy in our own strength.
Come to Him and eat Him…Come to Him and drink Him into yourself.
Isa 55:1 “Ho! Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk Without money and without price.
Isa 55:2 Why do you spend money for what is not bread, And your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, And let your soul delight itself in abundance.
The Father wants you to know Him, not about Him. Jesus will always make it hard for the head to know Him because it cannot be that anyone knows Him via head knowledge. But to the heart He invites and opens the way for you to come and dine with Him. Have dinner with God. He is all that you are and you are all that He is…share bread with Him and give thanks. He knows you.
